AP12. Master of Health Studies Exit Option
The Master of Health Studies (MHS) degree is an exit option for a student who enters one of the clinical masters or clinical doctorate degree programs at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, but who is either ineligible to complete the clinical program or is unable to complete the degree due to extenuating personal circumstances. The exit degree is intended to recognize the academic achievement of an individual who has demonstrated mastery of a minimum of 36 credits of specified course work that will count towards the Master of Health Studies degree. The requirements for the MGS degree include foundational knowledge of the processes of critical decision-making, interprofessional team collaboration, and selected theoretical and scientific foundations in a particular health care discipline. This knowledge can then be used by the graduate to seem employment in positions that value the understanding of patient/client health, wellness, or rehabilitation.
The Master of Health Studies would provide a student with a degree that acknowledges the student’s academic achievement and reflects the substantial investment of time and financial resources the student has made in a defined content area. A student eligible for the MHS will not obtain a credentialed clinical degree, but the MHS degree may enhance the graduate’s ability to serve the health care needs of society in alternative ways or may be a stepping stone to further graduate education. There are a variety of positions in health care and in the health and wellness industries that could be served by an individual with such a health care background. Such positions include, but are not limited to, research or administrative positions in healthcare, case management or patient/client/family advocacy, sales or product development, or positions in fitness or wellness industries.
