AP2. Advising Team
Students are assigned an Advising Team upon matriculation into the DPT program. The Advising Team consists of an Academic Advisor and a Clinical Education Advisor. Together, these two faculty members support the student regarding academic and clinical progress within the program, and foster each student’s professional development as a physical therapist. Students are encouraged to initiate meetings with their Advising Team to discuss their development and for support and guidance in relation to any personal or academic issues that arise that may impact learning and professional development.
The Academic Advisor:
- Collaborates with the student to discuss and advise on strategies for success as a student and future professional development.
- Reviews the student’s academic progress regularly throughout each semester, and provides academic counseling when necessary.
- Advises students about relevant Institute and Program academic policies when petitioning for waivers or unusual circumstances and bring petitions to the Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures for action.
The Clinical Education Advisor:
- Serves as a resource during clinical experience matching processes.
- Assists in planning and monitoring each student’s clinical placements across the curriculum, assuring variety and depth to meet program goals.
- Monitors student’s performance across clinical education experiences collaborating with the student, faculty, and clinical faculty to support learning during a clinical experience and/or to develop remedial plans as needed.
The Student
- Actively engages with the advising team.
- Identifies the advising relationship as an integral part of the academic experience.
- Uses the advising team as a resource for academic and professional growth.
- Responds promptly to communication and attends scheduled meetings.
