What role did the crusades play in the history of Europe and the broader Mediterranean World? Why did so many Christians go on crusade? How did Muslims understand the crusading movement? How did the idea of crusade evolve over time? We will consider these questions, as well as the evolution of the crusading movement and its modern legacy.
