The Arts
The Arts at HCC come alive in the Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, home to the Arts and Humanities Division and performance and instructional classroom studios. The Horowitz Center houses three performance venues, two art galleries, two dance studios and multiple instructional facilities, including the Horowitz Center Studio Theatre with seating up to 250, the 119-seat Monteabaro Recital Hall and the Smith Theatre, which accommodates up to 424 guests. Students explore the arts and create their own works in the academic setting of the Horowitz Center’s instructional classroom studios, where they access state-of-the-art ceramics, photography, painting, printmaking, drawing, design, and digital arts facilities, as well as a music rehearsal hall, sound-proof practice rooms, piano lab, digital music labs, and dance studios.
To give the college community direct access to the highest quality artistic expression, HCC has established a professional theatre in residence at the college, Rep Stage, HCC’s award-winning, professional Equity theatre company. The visual arts are celebrated in the Rouse Company Foundation Art Gallery, hosting exhibitions of professional artists, and in the Richard B. Talkin Family Gallery, hosting student, alumni, and community exhibitions. Additionally, HCC houses the Arts Collective, offering interdisciplinary performance opportunities to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and local artists via full-length productions, readings, original works, showcases, an improv group, workshops, festivals, and special events, while the HCC Theatre program offers many performance opportunities for students throughout each year, including a fall play production, staged readings, informal showcases, and an exciting Shakespeare birthday celebration performance. Dancers find rewarding dance experiences for students of varying levels of interest and ability in HCC’s Dance program; majors and non-dance majors are featured in Dance Department productions, including the HCC Dance Student Showcase and the HCC Dance Company Concert. There is always music in the Horowitz Center, where the HCC Music Concert Series features guest artists, faculty concerts, student ensembles, and spotlight concerts. As part of its community outreach program, the college has also established noncredit arts programs for both youth and adults through The Music Institute. Film series and festivals complement various productions and events each season. Each spring, HCC's annual literary and arts magazine “The Muse” publishes selected poems, prose, and visual art of HCC’s students, faculty, staff, and community members. Finally, the annual Women's Studies Salon presents an interdisciplinary exploration of women’s topics and issues by faculty, staff, and students of HCC, as well as distinguished community members.
