Current Curriculum Plan

Curriculum is 33 credits.

Alumni of the Harvard Macy Institute and Center for Medical Simulation courses are required to complete a portfolio if they want to waive any courses. Work completed in these courses may be applied for up to 12 credits toward degree completion. Specific requirements for each course waived are described further in the HPEd program manual.

This program is designed as a 33-credit part-time offering which can be completed over two years. To provide additional flexibility for learners, the courses may be spread out over up to five years. 

Registration in the one credit HE-743 Convocation Seminar will be required for each year beyond the initial two years, resulting in one additional required credit per year.

Elective courses in the MS HPEd program

*All MS students are required to complete 6 credits of elective courses individually or as a pair as part of one of the Concentrations listed below. Selection should align with the student’s areas of educational interest and ideally with the intended topic of the Scholarly Project. Any elective courses may be selected from any concentration and course selection must receive approval from the scholar’s advisor.

Research Concentration

The Research Concentration includes advanced courses in quantitative and qualitative methods. Students planning on collecting data as part of their scholarly project should discuss potential human subjects protection and Internal Review Board (IRB) requirements with their academic advisor during their initial advising appointment at the start of the program. The Research Concentration comprises of any two 3-credit courses:

  • HE-801 Advanced Qualitative Methods
  • HE-802 Advanced Quantitative Methods
  • HE-807 Systematic Reviews in Health Professions Education

Learning Concentration

This Learning Concentration is for scholars interested in advancing their expertise in the design and implementation of adult learning and educational effectiveness. The Learning Concentration comprises two 3-credit courses:

  • HE-812 Advanced Topics in Teaching and Learning
  • HE-813 Advanced Topics in Educational Effectiveness

Policy and Management Concentration

The Policy and Management Concentration is for scholars interesting in developing expertise related to the management and implementation of educational programs in the context of policy and organization. The Policy and Management Concentration comprises two 3-credit courses:

  • HE-805 Sociology of Health Professions Education
  • HE-806 Applying Improvement Science to Health Professions Education

Concentration in Simulation-based education

The concentration in simulation-based education requires successful completion of two courses offered by the Center for Medical Simulation:

  • The IMS Comprehensive Instructor Course
  • Advanced Instructor Course.
