Human Services - A.A. Degree (Transfer)

This area of study is designed to provide the necessary theoretical and practical skills required for entry-level human service workers in community settings such as: hospitals, mental health centers, social service agencies, substance abuse counseling sites, and gerontology centers. The curriculum is intended to provide the student with a consolidated body of knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to function in a variety of health and social services positions. The student may choose from three tracks: human services, chemical dependency, and developmental disabilities. The area of study also provides preparation for transfer to four-year schools and upgrading knowledge and skills of persons already working in community and social service areas.
General Education Core
Students enrolled in transfer patterns must take a minimum of 30 credits in General Education. Each student’s total of general education and required courses must equal at least 60 semester hours of credit.
Composition
Humanities, Arts Literature1
One Humanities Core Course (3 credits), plus one Arts Core Course (3 credits), plus one Literature Core Course (3 credits) satisfies the Humanities, Arts and Literature Core requirement, OR a World Language Sequence (8 credits), plus another Humanities, Arts, and Literature Core (3 credits) in a second discipline other than a world language satisfies the Humanities, Arts and Literature Core requirement.
Social Sciences2
One History Core Course is required and may be taken as either a Social and Behavioral Sciences Core or a Humanities Core. No more than 6 credits may be taken in History to meet Humanities Core and Social and Behavioral Sciences Core requirements.

Chemical Dependency Track

Chemical Dependency Track
The focus of this track is on basic counseling skills for individuals and families, substance abuse prevention, and rehabilitation. This track provides academic coursework to attain certification as a Certified Supervised Counselor–Alcohol and Drug. Additional clinical fieldwork in the addiction field is required.

Developmental Disabilities Track

The field of developmental disabilities includes working with the learning needs, social skills, and physical development of individuals ranging in age from infant to the older adult. Human service workers assist with both direct and indirect client services to facilitate access to resources.
