ARTT-123 African Art and Architecture

This course is a survey of traditional African art and architecture. Students will gain a broad knowledge of African forms and learn the distinct styles of a diverse selection of ethnic groups and countries across the continent, while gaining a general understanding of the meaning and use of art in African societies. The course will also examine the dislocation and presentation of African art in the West from the 19th century to present-day. Theoretical issues will be approached through reading assignments, class discussion, museum visits, and guest speakers. There will be in-class presentations.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Describe African art forms and the meaning and use of art in African societies.
  2. 2. Analyze and interpret significant works of African art and architecture.
  3. 3. Discuss ways that the art studied reflects its intellectual, social, historical, and cultural
    contexts.
  4. 4. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary relevant to the art and architecture of Africa.
  5. 5. Apply learned concepts, within an art historical approach and context, to the visual
    understanding of works of African art in museums.
  6. 6. Synthesize and analyze the functions of art history as it related to African art and
    architecture.
  7. 7. Develop a better visual understanding of works of African art. The student will have
    learned how to see, how to look, what to look for, and how to analyze what is being
    visualized.
  8. 8. Demonstrate through speaking and writing, personal, and aesthetic enrichment
  9. 9. Develop a visual ability to recognize the development of humanism in the history of
    African art and architecture.
