ARTT-241 Advanced Black and White Photography

This course will continue to focus on skills developed in Intermediate Photography using the camera as a means of creative self-expression and communication. The student will master the design and composition elements that are an intrinsic aspect of photography, and will learn to work independently in developing his or her photographic sense of sight. Extensive lab work will be required with emphasis on experimental darkroom techniques, and mastery of darkroom skills.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Describe the experimental darkroom technique of toning photographs.
  2. 2. Describe the experimental darkroom technique of texture screening.
  3. 3. Describe the technique of handcoloring photographs.
  4. 4. Report on a photographic exhibit.
  5. 5. Apply the darkroom technique of toning to a group of photographs.
  6. 6. Apply the darkroom technique of texture screening to a group of photographs.
  7. 7. Apply the technique of handcoloring to group of photographs.
  8. 8. Analyze various viewpoints on photography in a journal.
  9. 9. Analyze photographic exhibits in a journal.
  10. 10. Create a group of photographs utilizing Infrared film.
  11. 11. Create a body of work based on one theme and incorporate at least one experimental technique in these
    works.
  12. 12. Critique photographs for creativity, content, quality, and composition.
