DANC-174 Beginning Modern Dance Technique IV

This course is a continuation of DANC-171, DANC-172, and DANC-173 and provides a reinforcement of the fundamentals of modern dance techniques with emphasis on placement and alignment of the body and other preparatory work necessary for the establishment of a sound technical foundation. This course provides further development of knowledge, skills, abilities, and appreciation through daily practice and vocabulary of modern dance. Students at this level must be competent at the introductory level and ready to perform longer and more complex movement sequences.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Alignment: (at a Beginning level)
    a. Describe correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance techniques
    b. Analyze correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance techniques
    c. Demonstrate correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance techniques
  2. 2. Anatomy/Kinesiology: (at a Beginning level)
    a. Identify basic anatomical landmarks (bony and soft tissue) and major muscle groups
    b. Define the actions of major muscle groups and joints
    c. Apply and Demonstrate an awareness of experiential anatomy and kinesiology to dance
    movements
  3. 3. Musicality: (at a Beginning level)
    a. Identify musical structures most used in modern dance
    b. Classify modern dance movements according to musical commonalities
    c. Perform modern dance movements with sensitivity to musical structure
  4. 4. Synthesis and Evaluation: (at a Beginning level)
    a. Recognize body alignment and movement as pertaining to the various modern dance aesthetics
    in self and others
    b. Use one’s own awareness in order to self-evaluate and self-correct
    c. Measure one’s own progress through a written self-assessment
  5. 5. Connection: (at a Beginning level)
    a. Explain how the values of modern dance are reflected in daily practice
    b. Interpret historical context and aesthetic values in a written analysis of a live, professional
    modern dance performance
    c. Relate one’s own connection to the tradition of modern dance in a written self-assessment
  6. 6. Performance: (at a Beginning level)
    a. Demonstrate a physical understanding of movement principles as applied to modern dance
    techniques
    b. Demonstrate expressiveness in the performance of modern dance movements
