ENGL-087 Academic Advanced Writing and Grammar for ESL Students

In ENGL-087, students will acquire the English language skills needed to write multi-paragraph compositions at a level of correctness and fluency appropriate for an advanced learner of English who will soon enroll in a college composition class. Readings and discussions will prepare students to write narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative compositions that reflect critical analysis. Writing themes will help students to develop a global awareness. Relevant grammatical skills will be developed through formal instruction, group editing and computer-assisted instruction.

Course Objectives

1. 1. Write successful narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative compositions that reflect critical
   analysis.
   
2. 2. Employ all aspects of the writing process to generate, organize, and develop ideas and to revise written
   work.
3. 3. Employ the rules of academic essay formatting.
4. 4. Write compositions focused on main ideas that are unified, coherent and adequately developed with
   supporting information.
   
5. 5. Write introductions that lead to a clear thesis statement and indicate mode of development of a
   composition.
6. 6. Write body paragraphs that develop the main idea stated in the thesis statement.
   
7. 7. Write conclusions that bring a composition to an end.
8. 8. Compose complex and correctly structured sentences that contain a variety of phrases and clauses.
   
9. 9. Use the English verb system effectively.
   
10. 10. Demonstrate correct use of the parts of speech.
    
11. 11. Use the rules of grammar and the techniques of revision to organize and present ideas in written
    communication so that they are clearly stated and can be easily understood by a U.S. audience.
