ARTT 101 Two-Dimensional Art and Design

This course is an introduction to the theories, practices, and techniques of two-dimensional art, with an emphasis on drawing and design. The elements and principles of design, universal in the art of the past and the present and across all areas of art will be covered. The terms and concepts will provide students with the vocabulary needed to analyze the art of all cultures. The emphasis is on drawing conventions, visual organization, content, and composition that lead to the desired intent. Students will work in a variety of traditional media. This course will develop the analytic skills necessary to discuss the art of all cultures and to learn the strategies to succeed in the conception, organization, and production of unique works of two-dimensional art.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Define the elements and principles used in the art of the past, the present, and across all cultures.
  2. 2. Produce original art that shows the understanding of fundamental design principles and basic drawing conventions.
  3. 3. Produce original art that effectively uses the materials and visual organization to convey the intended concept and expression.
  4. 4. Identify, analyze, and discuss the elements, principles, and content in works of art.
  5. 5. Produce an extended exploration of a theme or concept through multiple works.
  6. 6. Use the sketchbook/journal as part of the creative process.
  7. 7. Use a variety of media in the creation of original art.
  8. 8. Recognize the two-dimensional design concepts and principles in art, music, craft, architecture, and the commercial arts.
  9. 9. Create works that exhibit positive work habits and a concern for craftsmanship.
  10. 10. Develop strategies to meet deadlines, complete assignments, and set personal goals.
  11. 11. Distinguish between different aims and methods of historical, contemporary, and cultural approaches to drawing and design.
  12. 12. Present a portfolio of works demonstrating an understanding of the course objectives.
  13. 13. Identify and apply the critical theories, specialized vocabulary, and concepts specific to the
    elements of art and the principles of design in two-dimensional artwork.
  14. 14. Plan carefully and then create original art that shows an understanding of the fundamental
    two-dimensional design principles and basic drawing conventions and incorporate risk-taking
    and creativity into problem solving for each project.
  15. 15. Identify and apply basic art and design concepts, posing and addressing questions on
    perspectives, social and cultural contexts, and assumptions to establish one’s own critical
    assessment of an artwork.
