ARTT 102 Three-Dimensional Art and Design

This course is an introduction to the elements and principles of three-dimensional design. The emphasis is on the design of form and space, visual organization, the development of conceptual ideas, and the use of materials that lead to the desired intent. Students will work in a variety of traditional material, non-traditional media, and newer technologies. Virtual space and the nonlinear connections found on the world-wide web will also be a spatial consideration. This course will develop the learning strategies needed to succeed in the conception, organization, and production of unique works of three-dimensional art.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Define the elements and principles used in the art of the past, the present, and
    across other cultures.
  2. 2. Produce original art in three dimensions that shows the understanding of fundamental design principles with an emphasis on form and space.
  3. 3. Produce original art that effectively uses the materials and visual organization to
    convey the intended concept and expression.
  4. 4. Identify, analyze, and discuss the elements, principles, and content in traditional
    works of art and conceptual based contemporary art; use of the web for research,
    interaction, and design will be important components of this course.
  5. 5. Use a variety of traditional, non-traditional, and new technology media in the
    creation of original work, including digital images and digital presentations.
  6. 6. Produce an extended exploration of a theme or concept through multiple works.
  7. 7. Use the sketchbook/journal as part of the creative process.
  8. 8. Create works that exhibit positive work habits and a concern for craftsmanship.
  9. 9. Develop strategies to meet deadlines, complete assignments, and set personal
    goals.
  10. 10. Distinguish between different aims and methods of historical, contemporary, and
    cultural approaches to three-dimensional art.
  11. 11. Present a digital portfolio of works demonstrating a mastery of the course
    objectives.
  12. 12. Identify and apply the critical theories, specialized vocabulary, and concepts specific to three-dimensional
    art and design.
  13. 13. Plan carefully and then create original three-dimensional art that shows an understanding of
    the fundamental design principles and incorporates risk-taking and creativity into problem
    solving for each project.
  14. 14. Identify and apply basic three-dimensional art and design concepts, posing and addressing
    questions on perspectives, social and cultural contexts, and assumptions to establish one’s
    own critical assessment of an artwork.
  15. 15. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of three-dimensional art as an expression of
    the human condition.
