ARTT 103 Art Appreciation

The overall purpose of this course is to encourage an appreciation of Western Art. This is a highly visual course in which students will examine and discuss works of art from the prehistoric to the contemporary periods. Students will look at and analyze many images in order to gain an understanding of their form and content. Students will analyze the formal structure of various works of art as well as consider them in the context of the historical period and cultural framework in which they were produced. Recommended for non-art majors.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related the role of art in contemporary
    societies and how its creative process and humanistic exploration brings and adds meaning
    and aesthetics to the lives of people.
  2. 2. Pose and address questions related to a variety of art produced in many cultures around the
    world to address the creative and humanistic influence of the art-making process and its
    effects on cultures and societies.
  3. 3. Incorporate a hands-on approach and innovative ways to examine various processes of artmaking
    and how artists have taken risks and have used problem-solving techniques to invent
    new ways of using materials to create works of art.
  4. 4. Assess and reflect on art techniques such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture to critically
    analyze the role of creative and aesthetic processes that reveal the significance of art in
    illuminating the human condition and search for meaning.
