ARTT 113 Introduction to Digital Art and Design

Designed for students not majoring in art, this course is an introduction to the theories, practices, and techniques of two-dimensional art, with an emphasis on digital art and imaging. Working with Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, students will learn the elements and principles of two-dimensional design. The emphasis is on creating works of art through digital conventions, visual organization, content, and composition. This course will develop the analytic skills necessary to learn the strategies to succeed in the conception, organization, and production of unique works of two-dimensional digital art. The terms and concepts will provide students with the vocabulary needed to explore the philosophical and ethical issues that electronic image making presents, and its effects through fine art, commercial art, and the media.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Recognize the elements and principles of two-dimensional design used in traditional and digital art.
  2. 2. Produce original art that shows the understanding of fundamental design principles and digital conventions.
  3. 3. Produce original art that effectively uses materials and visual organization to convey intended concept and expression.
  4. 4. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to past and contemporary issues of aesthetics and creativity in digital art and media.
  5. 5. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into analysis and problem-solving methods throughout the creative and production processes in digital arts.
  6. 6. Analyze the use of digital imagery and design in fine art, commercial art, and the media to affect emotional response, public opinion, and societal issues.
  7. 7. Assess and critically analyze the role of creative and aesthetic activities in illuminating the human condition through the digital manipulation of imagery in news media, advertising, and entertainment media.
