ARTT 201 Contemporary Color Design

This course provides an in-depth analysis and practical application of color and design for designers and fine artists. Students will learn color theory, color perception, color expression, and the use of color as an element of design. This course is a good preparation for graphic design, painting, and interior design, as the principles of color harmony and contrast will be emphasized. Students will gain visual sensitivity to the visual world and to the use of color in works of contemporary art.

Course Objectives

1. 1. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in design.
2. 2. Verbalize and employ the principles of design.
3. 3. Describe and use the relative nature of color perception.
4. 4. Develop possible solutions to design problems by making thumbnail designs, sketches, and
   final original projects.
5. 5. Demonstrate resourcefulness, practicality, and craftsmanship when selecting, organizing,
   and using art materials.
6. 6. Perceive, analyze, and verbalize the use of focal points and eye movement that contribute
   to successful design.
7. 7. Demonstrate in his/her work an understanding of the dynamics of color and color
   relationships.
8. 8. Describe color association and use color both descriptively and expressively.
9. 9. Relate verbally an understanding of the universal use of color dynamics in the fine and
   applied arts.
10. 10. Describe the use of color in the works of current contemporary artists.
11. 11. Present a portfolio of works demonstrating mastery of the course objectives.
