ARTT 203 Drawing II: Observation and Composition

This course will review expand upon the concepts, skills, and subject matter covered in Drawing I. The emphasis is on perception and the traditional conventions of representational drawing, including perspective, proportion, and composition. Students will work in line to emphasize accurate shapes and values to develop form and the effect of light. The use of space and the difference between depiction and suggestion will be emphasized. Students will learn to develop drawings based on expression and conceptual intents. Previous drawing experience is absolutely necessary. Subjects may include still life, interiors, landscape, portraits, and figures.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Employ common drawing media and tools to create representational drawings.
  2. 2. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary of drawing for depiction and suggestion.
  3. 3. Use shape to describe a variety of subjects in a suggested space.
  4. 4. Apply the concepts of linear and atmospheric perspective.
  5. 5. Observe and represent the proportions of objects, figures, and spaces.
  6. 6. Suggest form and space using line, plane, and tonal modulation.
  7. 7. Create works that exhibit positive work habits and a concern for craftsmanship.
  8. 8. Perceive and analyze the compositional principles that contribute to effective expression.
  9. 9. Create drawings from the imagination that develop an intended expression.
  10. 10. Develop strategies to meet deadlines, complete assignments, and set personal goals.
  11. 11. Distinguish between different aims and methods of historical, contemporary, and cultural
    approaches to drawing.
