ARTT 212 Painting II

This course is a continuation of ARTT-211, Painting I. Students continue to polish their technical skills, and there is more emphasis on conceptual concerns. Contemporary approaches to representational painting are studied, and students have more latitude for stylistic exploration. Problems will challenge students' imaginations as well as their technical expertise.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Demonstrate the effective use of the media, materials, brushes, tools, and supports
    associated with oil or acrylic painting.
  2. 2. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in painting, including the standard
    nomenclature for artists pigments.
  3. 3. Demonstrate an awareness of the special health and safety hazards associated with painting
    through safe practices and positive work habits that emphasize good craftsmanship and a
    respect for the well-being of others.
  4. 4. Recognize and reproduce the components of color mixtures.
  5. 5. Exhibit an increased awareness of the visual word through the specificity or sensitivity of
    their observation.
  6. 6. Approach the process of painting coherently so that the paintings have a sense of
    resolution in each stage of their development.
  7. 7. Describe form and suggest space using color and tonal modulation
  8. 8. Distinguish between the aims of historical and contemporary approaches to painting.
  9. 9. Perceive and analyze the elements that make paintings successful and unsuccessful.
  10. 10. Demonstrate the beginnings of a personal approach to painting.
  11. 11. Present a portfolio of works demonstrating their mastery of the course objectives.
