ARTT 229 Chinese Brush Painting I

Chinese Brush Painting is a unique art form, reflecting the principles of Chinese aesthetics, specialized materials and techniques. In this course, students will learn the basic principles of Chinese art and their relationship to universal design principles. The subjects for the paintings will be the traditional flora and fauna typical of this art form. The techniques include the use of bamboo brushes; the creation of ink washes in five gradations, the use of Chinese liquid transparent and opaque colors, and working on absorbent rice paper. Overall, students will express themselves in a Chinese form of art, learn a new artistic medium, and see the relationship to western principles and techniques.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the concepts, skills, and media of Chinese
    painting.
  2. 2. Demonstrate the basic techniques of this special medium: five tones of black ink,
    calligraphic brush strokes, placement in space, contrast between dark and light, and wet
    and dry ink.
  3. 3. Use expressive and descriptive mark making within the tradition of the medium.
  4. 4. Identify and apply the terminology used in Chinese painting and the historical and
    contemporary issues related to Chinese painting.
  5. 5. Critically perceive and analyze the elements which make a painting successful.
