ARTT 230 Chinese Brush Painting II

This course is the continuation of ARTT-229. In this course, students will continue their study of the fundamental principles of Chinese art. The student will focus on 'Six Principles' of Chinese Painting for a more theoretical approach to the course. More comprehensive study on technique in the using brush stroke, ink, color, and variations on absorbent/non-absorbent paper will be the key for students that want to acquire mastery of this art form. The subject matter will be expanded beyond ARTT-229 to include landscape and atmosphere.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge of the concepts, skills, and medium used in Chinese
    painting.
  2. 2. Demonstrate the basic techniques of this special medium, including five-tones of ink washes,
    calligraphic brush strokes, placement in space, contrast between dark and light, and wet and
    dry ink.
  3. 3. Expressively and descriptively use mark making within the traditions of this medium.
  4. 4. Identify and apply the terminology used in Chinese painting, and the basic knowledge of the
    historical and contemporary issues related to Chinese painting.
  5. 5. Critically analyze the elements and principles which make a painting successful.
  6. 6. Develop a personal direction, preference, or mode of expression in his/her painting.
  7. 7. Demonstrate the use of atmosphere and suggestion to depict landscape and deep space.
