ARTT 246 Photographic Studio Lighting

An introduction to the principles of artificial lighting and camera work as they are applied in studio photography; teaches studio lighting for still lifes, products, portraits, and figure photography. Students must have a 35 mm fully adjustable SLR camera. The use of medium format cameras will be covered.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in lighting studios.
  2. 2. Identify lighting equipment, systems, and backgrounds.
  3. 3. Describe and utilize various lighting set ups.
  4. 4. Operate studio lighting equipment such as electronic flash systems and hot light systems.
  5. 5. Demonstrate and apply lighting and posing techniques for portrait photography.
  6. 6. Demonstrate and apply lighting and arrangement techniques for product and still life photography.
  7. 7. Identify and demonstrate medium format camera techniques.
  8. 8. Critique images for content, quality, and composition.
  9. 9. Evaluate his/her images to be submitted in a final portfolio.
