ARTT 289 Contemporary Art

This course is an introduction to International Contemporary Art, covering the past twenty-five years of art, including the relevant art works of today. Throughout the duration of this course, students will participate in lectures, discussions, and field trips that revolve around the most common themes in contemporary art. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of artistic mediums and subsequently, sub-genres currently existing in contemporary art, as well as discussing the role of technology and the future of art. Students will access the work and apply critical thinking skills through reading and writing assignments and culminating with a presentation on a contemporary artist of their choice. This course will also offer opportunities for students to interact with local artists and art professionals. Topics discussed during the course will be examined on both a regional and global scale, which will encourage students to examine their own roles in the contemporary art world.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify and apply critical theories and concepts related to the contemporary modes of art
    making, which bring to the surface creativity, humanism, and invention and bring to light how
    it connects to people through its meaning and engagements with the viewer, artists, and the
    current processes of art making.
  2. 2. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into the analysis of how individual artists
    and their creative work during the contemporary period reflected and foreshadowed a
    changing society.
  3. 3. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze the role of the creative process by interpreting and
    drawing conclusions about humanistic expression and search for meaning in the works of
    arts from the contemporary period.
  4. 4. Pose and address questions related to why the artistic expression in contemporary art has
    powerful effects on the social and cultural contexts, both globally and on an individual scale.
