CHEM 115 Chemistry and Society Laboratory

After successful completion of this laboratory, students will have an understanding of the metric system, basic laboratory measurements and instruments.  Students will investigate methods of chemical analysis using samples of common household substances.  Students will analyze Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labels, and claims from a consumer’s point of view and from environmental, health, industrial, and technological perspectives.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Communicate fundamental concepts in chemistry using appropriate vocabulary, units, symbols, and notations.
  2. 2. Apply scientific principles and scientific reasoning techniques to solve qualitative and quantitative problems pertaining to, but not limited to measurements of mass, energy and solution concentration.
  3. 3. Evaluate and explain the reasonableness of a solution to problems such as quantitative measurements of mass, energy, and solution concentration relating to the chemistry of every day household chemicals and to environmental issues.
  4. 4. Design and perform chemistry experiment(s) to apply theoretical concepts acquired in lecture to laboratory experiments and to know and observe all safety rules.
  5. 5. Analyze and interpret data collected in the laboratory.
