CHEM 201 Organic Chemistry I

This course is designed mainly for science majors and pre-professional students. It will enable students to answer questions and solve problems involving structure, nomenclature, physical properties, synthesis, reactions, and mechanisms for a variety of organic compounds. These will include, but not be limited to, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cycloalkanes, cycloalkenes, dienes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and multifunctional group aliphatic compounds. It will also introduce students to spectroscopic methods including IR, UV-VIS, MS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. In the laboratory, students will acquire skills in laboratory techniques, prepare organic compounds, study their properties, and interpret data collected to identify unknowns.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Construct condensed chemical formulas (including bond-line formulas) which represent functional groups in organic chemistry.
  2. 2. Construct names of organic compounds using the IUPAC System.
  3. 3. Analyze functional groups and understand their chemistry.
  4. 4. Determine methods of synthesis for aliphatic compounds and be able to predict and understand their reaction mechanisms.
  5. 5. Analyze products for major organic reactions by name and structure.
