CMSY 105 Managing and Maintaining PCs and Mobile Devices I

Upon completion of this course, students will have a basic understanding of the function and operation of the major elements of personal computer systems, laptops, tablets and mobile devices, and how to localize and correct common hardware and software problems. Students will have hands-on, real-world experience to reinforce the concepts. Special emphasis will be placed on how systems are configured, modified, and expanded to meet new requirements. This course, along with CMSY-106, prepares students for A+ Certification offered by the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify the safety hazards involved in working with electronic equipment.
  2. 2. Identify different motherboard components and their purpose on the motherboard.
  3. 3. Compare processor (CPU) characteristics and differentiate each processor by its characteristics.
  4. 4. Discuss memory technologies and upgrade memory.
  5. 5. Disassemble and assemble computer components and make them work.
  6. 6. Install and configure various Windows and Linux Operating Systems.
  7. 7. Install and configure various I/O devices.
  8. 8. Discuss different hard drive technologies and choose the proper hard drive for custom installation.
  9. 9. Prepare a new hard drive for partitioning before installation of operating system.
  10. 10. Identify Windows built-in tool to troubleshoot computer hardware and software problems.
  11. 11. Discuss how to interact with customers when selling, servicing, and supporting computers.
