CRIM 105 Introduction to Corrections

This course introduces students to the field of corrections, as it relates to the justice system. The course will focus on the history of corrections and the forms of criminal sanctions at the federal, state, and local levels.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Explore the contradictory goals/purposes of corrections.
  2. 2. Evaluate the correctional system and explore alternative models.
  3. 3. Describe the methods and statistics of corrections and the larger CJ system.
  4. 4. Examine the history of correctional thought and practices.
  5. 5. Discuss alternative forms of criminal sanctioning.
  6. 6. Describe the U.S. sentencing procedure and address sentencing disparity.
  7. 7. List and describe the various models of correctional systems.
  8. 8. Describe correctional clients including various "types of offenders"
  9. 9. Discuss the major systems of prisoner classification.
  10. 10. Explore the prison subculture
  11. 11. Examine local jails and detention centers.
  12. 12. Explore the unique "pretrial detention" inmate.
  13. 13. Examine the US system of probation
  14. 14. Evaluate modern conditions of incarceration in state and federal institutions.
  15. 15. Describe the legal rights of inmates according to the constitution and recent court cases.
  16. 16. Examine Corrections for Women.
  17. 17. Describe major correctional dilemmas.
  18. 18. Explore the future of corrections.
  19. 19. Compare and contrast the various correctional institutions in Maryland.
