EDUC 111 Child Growth and Development

Through the study of the early childhood and elementary years, the student will be able to describe the language, cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of young children, birth to 12 years. Instruction will focus on theories of child development, research methods, and developmental milestones. Knowledge learned in this course can be applied to parenting and to careers in early childhood and elementary education. This course meets the Maryland State Department of Education Child Development requirement for an initial certificate in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education. This course meets the MSDE Human Growth and Development requirement for Generic Special Education Infant/Primary, and Generic Special Education Elementary/ Middle. This course fulfills Part 1 of (2 parts) of the Child Care Certificate required for Child Care Teacher-Preschool. (EDUC 112 is required to complete the Child Care Certificate.)

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Describe the stages of physical, motor, language, cognitive, social and emotional
    development of children from infancy to age 12.
  2. 2. List the major developmental milestones of children from infancy to age 12.
  3. 3. Describe the major research methods and assessment techniques used to study
    children.
  4. 4. Describe the major contemporary theories in child development and relate the
    theoretical stages to the milestones of development.
  5. 5. Observe and evaluate an individual child.
  6. 6. Describe several examples of how genetic and environmental factors interplay to
    influence child development.
  7. 7. Describe the three stages of pre-natal development.
  8. 8. List at least 3 negative and 3 positive influences on prenatal development and
    describe the long term consequences of each.
  9. 9. List the 3 stages of childbirth.
  10. 10. Describe the major physical characteristics and behavior of the healthy neonate.
  11. 11. Discuss the impact of family and parenting styles on the infancy, early childhood
    and middle childhood periods of child development.
  12. 12. Outline several ways neighborhood, school, society and SES impact on the
    development of children.
  13. 13. Compare the status of children in developing countries to that of children in the
    western industrialized nations.
