EMSP 106 Emergency Medical Technician I

Successful completion of this course along with successful completion of EMSP 107: Emergency Medical Technician II prepares students for the Maryland and National Registry EMT certification written and practical examinations and follows the guidelines established for EMT training by the DOT/NHTSA/HRSA EMT Education Standards. Students will be able to properly perform the various psychomotor skills utilized by emergency medical technician-level prehospital care providers in the care of sick or injured persons. Course completion for CPR for the health care practitioner is an expected outcome for EMSP 106. Participation in EMSP 107 (the ride along component of EMT training) requires completion of the Health Sciences Division Health Data Form available on the HCC website. A criminal background investigation and drug screening will also be required for EMSP 107. Per Maryland law, students must be at least 18 years of age (or 16-18 with signed parental permission) to take EMSP 106 and EMSP 107.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Discuss legal, ethical and moral issues pertaining to EMT level care.
  2. 2. Discuss the role and responsibilities of the BLS level provider in the health care delivery
    team.
  3. 3. Demonstrate appropriate safety concerns for the following: scene safety, provider safety,
    hazardous material awareness, and infection control procedures.
  4. 4. Perform safe lifting and moving techniques for patients.
  5. 5. Perform 1 and 2 rescuer CPR and FBAO removal techniques on adults, children and infants
    following current standards and guidelines.
  6. 6. Properly use an AED in the treatment of cardiac arrest.
  7. 7. Describe the various body systems, the components (organs, tissues, structures, etc.) of each
    system, function of each system, and how each system relates to the others.
  8. 8. Perform a comprehensive BLS level patient assessment (including history and physical
    examination) for a sick or injured person.
  9. 9. Accurately perform vital signs assessment.
  10. 10. Provide appropriate BLS level care for a sick or injured person.
  11. 11. Demonstrate appropriate written and verbal communication and documentation skills.
  12. 12. Perform all psychomotor skills for the BLS level provider, including:
    • Patient assessment to include vital signs and physical examination
    • History gathering
    • Airway and breathing management
    • Shock identification and treatment
