EMSP 251 Paramedic Internship
This course provides the opportunity for students to complete the field internship portion of the paramedic training process. Students will develop the necessary competencies, including team leading, to properly perform the skills and duties of novice (entry-level) paramedics. Students will perform patient care in both simulated scenarios and with real patients under direct observation of paramedic preceptors and allied health professionals in a variety of health care settings. This course will evaluate the student's psychomotor skills as well as determine if they possess the appropriate knowledge and attitudes required of entry-level Paramedics. Students must successfully complete this course and be eligible to receive the appropriate EMS program certificate or degree to be eligible for the National Registry of EMTs Paramedic (NRP) testing.

Course Objectives
- 1. Model the appropriate affective domain characteristics identified by the Paramedic Department
of Transportation (DOT) Education Standards. - 2. Complete all psychomotor core competencies for the internship by successfully performing the
required number of Advanced Life Support (ALS) team leads.
- 3. Perform a comprehensive assessment, and formulate and implement a treatment plan for ALS
patients with:
a. Chest pain and cardiac complaints
b. Stroke
c. Dyspnea or respiratory distress
d. Syncope or near-syncope
e. Abdominal complaints
f. Altered mental status
g. Anaphylaxis and allergic reactions
h. Poisoning and toxicological emergencies
i. Traumatic injuries to include: fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries, spinal injuries,
lacerations, avulsions, amputations, crushes, shock, internal blood loss, and burns
j. Environmental emergencies, including: heat- and cold-related emergencies and drowning
k. Endocrine emergencies
l. Neurological emergencies
m. Behavioral emergencies
n. Obstetrical, gynecological, and neonatal emergencies
o. Infectious and communicable diseases
p. Pediatric emergencies - 4. Perform all skills currently listed in the DOT Education Standards for Paramedics.
- 5. Serve as a novice-level team leader in pre-hospital emergency situations by collecting and
evaluating signs and symptoms, gathering a patient history, performing a physical examination. - 6. Interpret findings from pre-hospital evaluation and formulate a treatment plan that is executed
at the direction of the student team leader.
