ENGL 083 Academic Intermediate Reading for ESL Students

In this course, reading is approached as an integral part of an ESL student's overall English language learning, not as an isolated skill. In addition to reading comprehension and vocabulary skill building, students will respond to information and concepts from a variety of assigned materials, both orally and in writing.

Course Objectives

1. 1. Demonstrate comprehension of assigned authentic and adapted readings both orally and in writing.
   a. Identify the topic and stated and implied main ideas of passages.
   b. List details used to support the main idea and draw logical conclusions.
   c. Summarize, paraphrase and outline assigned readings.
   d. Use previewing, scanning, inferences, and patterns of organization to increase reading
   comprehension.
   e. Learn transition words that are used to make logical connections between sentences and between
   paragraphs.
2. 2. Demonstrate comprehension of an expanded vocabulary.
   a. Define an unknown word or idiom using the context.
   b. Identify common prefixes, roots and suffixes and their meanings.
   c. Use an assigned set of vocabulary words correctly in practice exercises and student-generated
   sentences.
3. 3. Develop critical thinking skills through analysis and response to short stories and articles.
4. 4. Participate in class discussions of assigned readings, several of which will contain global themes.
