ENGL 085 Academic Advanced Oral Communication for ESL Students

In this course, students will develop the listening and speaking skills needed to succeed at a US college or university. Class work will consist of pronunciation practice, listening activities, small group and class discussions of selected readings and lectures, oral presentations, and simulations of aspects of academic life. If students place into both a reading and writing course, they are required to take ENGL 085. Students can be exempted from this requirement by passing an oral exam. Students placed into ENGL 083 AND ENGL 084 must complete both ENGL 083 and ENGL 084 before taking ENGL 085.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Correctly produce key aspects of English pronunciation.
    a. clearly pronounce consonant and vowel sounds, individually and in clusters and blends.
    b. correctly apply appropriate word stress, sentence stress, and intonation patterns when reading aloud and
    speaking.
  2. 2. Comprehend spoken language about a diversity of academic topics and college matters.
    a. respond appropriately to oral instructions, questions, and discussions.
    b. demonstrate comprehension when listening to lectures and oral presentations involving academic material.
  3. 3. Speak successfully about a diversity of academic topics in a variety of academic contexts.
    a. initiate, maintain and close a conversation about academic or institutional issues.
    b. contribute to class discussions by paraphrasing, questioning, adding information, requesting clarification or
    additional information, and expressing disagreement.
    c. prepare and deliver planned oral presentations and extemporaneous speeches on topics related to future
    course work.
    i. use visual aids such as PowerPoint to improve an oral presentation.
    ii. integrate outside source material into an oral presentation.
    d. participate in role-plays of interpersonal encounters typical of the academic environment.
    e. examine the cultural norms in oral language that may impact communication in the global community.
