ENGL 093 Directed Studies in Reading

Students will strengthen their use of reading skills and strategies in preparation for the academic reading and critical thinking required to comprehend college-level text. In addition to reading comprehension and vocabulary skill building, students will develop an understanding of the interactive reading process by reading text and responding in writing.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Apply metacognitive and critical thinking strategies in order to complete reading tasks.
  2. 2. Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its support over the course of the text.
  3. 3. Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly.
  4. 4. Make logical inferences based on the text.
  5. 5. Formulate reader responses that demonstrate text comprehension.
  6. 6. Summarize clearly and accurately.
  7. 7. Expand vocabulary using a variety of strategies.
  8. 8. Make connections between reading and writing by finding, using, and referencing specific, relevant textual evidence to support ideas.
