HEED 216 Health Care in the US

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the impact of current legislative regulations on the health care delivery system, the effect of economics on treatment choices, and an exploration of issues in Medicaid and Medicare. The course includes an overview of the health care system and an examination of the medical infrastructure with a historical perspective.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Describe influences upon patient and provider behavioral characteristics.
  2. 2. Compare and contrast different forms of health care providers including
    HMOs, PPOs, IPAs, and SHMOs.
  3. 3. Discuss factors that influence health promotion, disease prevention,
    mortality, and morbidity
  4. 4. Explain the role alternative health care currently has in the U.S. health
    care system.
  5. 5. Analyze, and compare and contrast current federal government policy
    relative to personal health insurance, employee-based health insurance,
    and government-based health insurance.
  6. 6. Identify and analyze current federal policies related to Medicare.
  7. 7. Compare and contrast managed care organizations in the context of the
    current delivery systems.
  8. 8. Identify the political, historical, and social factors influencing the
    availability and accessibility of health care in the U.S.
  9. 9. Provide a description of the history of medical and health care in the US.
  10. 10. Outline the development of health care delivery systems in the US.
