HORT 220 Landscape Design and Contracting

In this course, students will be introduced to the art, aesthetics and science of residential and commercial landscape design and contracting. In addition, the student will be able to proceed with a design plan and install a proper soil, grasses, plant materials, shrubs, and structures that will be manageable and lasting. The student will also be introduced to legal responsibilities and cost estimation relative to landscape contracting.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Design a practical and aesthetic residential property.
  2. 2. Provide comprehensive construction details and cost estimates for decks, patios, walks, retaining walls,
    fences, gazebos, water features and planting.
  3. 3. Analyze grading requirements, cuts and fills, and means of controlling slopes.
  4. 4. Identify the positive and negative features in site analysis.
  5. 5. Identify concepts of outdoor spatial relationships, scale, time and plant groupings for effective organic
    design.
  6. 6. Utilize the disciplines of cultural, microclimate and ecological needs of plants in effective planting
    design.
  7. 7. Identify and articulate the Principles of Design and have a solid vocabulary of horticultural terms.
  8. 8. Describe the legal responsibilities of landscape contracting.
  9. 9. Examine the History of Landscape Design and notable gardens of the world.
