HUMN 107 Arts, Cultures, and Ideas

This is an interdisciplinary course that introduces students to how the humanities and their arts address ways of thinking about creativity and the human experience. Students approach cultural achievements as rooted in their historical settings, showing how the political, social, and economic events of each period influence their creation. The course will focus on at least three of the following areas of the humanities appropriate to the period of history and the specific culture being studied: architecture, criticism, dance, ethics, film, literature, music, painting, philosophy, photography, religion, sculpture, and theatre. Historical periods and individual cultures to be studied within these periods will be determined among various sections each semester.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Identify and apply critical theories, concepts, and skills for interpreting works of art and in formulating aesthetic judgments.
  2. 2. Incorporate innovation, risk-taking, and creativity into an analysis of the role of the arts and the creative process as a problem-solving methodology.
  3. 3. Explain how the works of art created by a culture or subculture reveal values of that culture or subculture.
  4. 4. Analyze how artistic expression reflects the confluence of creative and humanistic expression with the historical, social, political, and cultural contexts studied.
  5. 5. Pose and address questions fundamental to humanities and the arts regarding the period under study in relation to contemporary times, with social and cultural contexts.
  6. 6. Assess, reflect on, and critically analyze performance and creative efforts in writing, and their role in illuminating the human spirit, creative process, and search for meaning.
  7. 7. Communicate abstract or concrete ideas effectively, including the expression of divergent points of view.
  8. 8. Synthesize information from a variety of credible resources and make use of appropriate visual media to create and deliver an effective presentation.
  9. 9. Identify and/or describe arts-related components of the cultures or subcultures being studied.
  10. 10. Analyze factors which contribute to the aesthetic development and/or integrity of the culture or subculture and be able to articulate them.
