HUMS 121 Introduction to Chemical Dependency Treatment

This course provides students with the opportunity to study the various modalities of addiction therapy. Counseling skills and the philosophical aspects of addiction will also be presented in this course.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Describe the disease model of addiction, and current paradigms and definitions
    thereof.
  2. 2. Identify the historical and socio-cultural aspects of treatment efforts for alcoholism and
    drug addiction in this country.
  3. 3. Describe and summarize the various philosophies of treatment, particularly the
    abstinence and methadone camps.
  4. 4. Differentiate between detoxification, primary, secondary and tertiary treatment phases;
    the goals and objectives of each, regardless of setting.
  5. 5. Define and discuss the "pre-treatment" phase, i.e. motivational structures designed to
    bring about early entry into the treatment network.
  6. 6. Differentiate between at least 3 different models of detoxification.
  7. 7. Outline the goals of the primary phase of treatment and discuss the different settings in
    which it takes place, and the clinical criteria for referral into each setting.
  8. 8. Describe the various options for ongoing treatment, and the component parts to it.
  9. 9. Compare and contrast the difference between the public and private sectors in the ability
    to service different segments of the addicted population.
  10. 10. Explain the rationale for family therapy, groups and education sessions for family
    members, and how they are typically provided.
  11. 11. Describe contemporary forms of treatment for codependents, children and adult
    children of alcoholics and drug addicts.
  12. 12. Describe the process of intake, assessment, treatment planning, problem-oriented
    documentation, and discharge planning and follow-up.
