MLTS 208 Clinical Immunohematology

Clinical Immunohematology combines lecture and laboratory practice integral to the profession of Medical Laboratory Science. With emphasis on good laboratory practices and safety, the course will focus on the following clinical blood bank topics: serological procedures, immunohematology genetics, blood groups and HLA system, blood bank testing, donation, and component therapy.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Interpret the genetics associated with blood typing and transfusion.
  2. 2. Discuss, compare, and evaluate the clinical significance of the various blood groups and describe the current testing used in the Blood Bank Laboratory – with special emphasis on ABO and Rh blood groups.
  3. 3. Describe the regulations, procedures, rationales, and safety concerns with donations and component therapies.
