MUSC 115 Keyboard Skills II

Keyboard Skills II is a corequisite course taken the same semester as MUSC 111A Music Theory II and MUSC 111P Ear Training and Musicianship II. It offers the student the second level of functional piano and technique. It is a continuation of MUSC 114 in preparation for the required music major Piano Proficiency Examination. In addition, it reinforces concepts from MUSC 111A and MUSC 111P as well as introduces concepts from MUSC 210A, Music Theory III.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Play black key major scales, ascending and descending, two octaves, hands together.
  2. 3. Play black key major arpeggios, ascending and descending, two octaves, hands together with
    thumb turns.
  3. 2. Plays black key minor scales, (all three forms), ascending and descending, two octaves, hands
    together.
  4. 4. Play black key minor arpeggios, ascending and descending, two octaves, hands together with
    thumb turns.
  5. 5. Play I-IV-V-I using triads in root position, ascending only, hands together, in all black major
    keys.
  6. 6. Play i-iv-V-I using triads in root position, ascending only, hands together, in all black minor
    keys.
  7. 6. Play i-iv-V-I using triads in root position, ascending only, hands together, in all black minor
    keys.
  8. 7. Play I-IV-I-V-V7-I in typical cadential position in all black major keys, hands together.
  9. 8. Play i-iv-I-V-V7-i in typical cadential position in all black minor keys, hands together.
  10. 9. Harmonize melodies with primary chords and additional diatonic chords.
  11. 10. Transpose melodies with primary chords and additional diatonic chords.
  12. 11. Play I-V-vi-iii-IV-I in C, D, and Eb major (LH should play the roots down a fourth and then up
    a second).
  13. 12. Play i-V-vi-iii-IV-I in F, G, and Bb minor (LH should play the roots down a fourth and then up
    a second).
  14. 13. Play i-VI-VII-v-VI-iv-v-III-iv-V-I in two white keys and two black keys (cannot be A, E, D, or
    C minor).
  15. 14. Play from a three-part open choral score.
  16. 15. Play progressions using secondary dominants in D, B, Eb, and F# major (begin both
    progressions in the same position as shown in the handout): I-V7/V-V-I and I-V7/vi-vi-ii-V7-I.
  17. 16. Play progressions with modulation beginning in G, E, and Eb major: I- IV-V-I-vi=ii-V-I
    and i-iv-V-i-III=I-IV-V-I beginning in D, F, and C# minor.
  18. 17. Harmonize melodies with secondary chords.
  19. 18. Improvise a melody over a given chord progression from a lead sheet.
  20. 19. Play an accompaniment.
  21. 20. Play augmented sixth chords in four parts with good voice leading and the proper resolution.
  22. 21. Play Neapolitan sixth chords with the most commonly used inversion and proper resolution.
  23. 22. Play one piece of classical repertoire (included in the Proficiency Exam).
  24. 23. Pass the Proficiency Exam (some materials will be given two days prior to the exam).
