MUSC 135 Fundamentals of Musicianship and Keyboard Skills

This class is designed to develop students' ability to match pitch, sing intervals, sing pitches of scales and chords, sight-sing simple written melodies with solfege syllables, perform simple rhythmic patterns, and take simple dictation. It is also designed to introduce students to basic keyboard skills including developing a comfortable hand position and ease of hand movement on the keyboards. This course is designed for music major students with little or no musical backgrounds, and it will prepare students for lab work.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Sing back pitches or short melodies they hear with correct intonation.
  2. 2. Identify the ascending and descending direction of intervals and melodic lines.
  3. 3. Sing a given interval in both ascending and descending directions.
  4. 4. Sing scale or triadic patterns using solfege syllables.
  5. 5. Sing back a short and simple melody with solfege syllables.
  6. 6. Sing a simple written melody with correct solfege syllables.
  7. 7. Tap, clap, or speak back a simple rhythmic pattern.
  8. 8. Tap, clap, or speak a written rhythmic pattern.
  9. 9. Identify the meter of a melody.
  10. 10. Take simple four-measure melodic and rhythmic dictation.
  11. 11. Play simple stepwise and skipwise melodies on the keyboard.
