MUSC 211P Ear Training and Musicianship IV

This is the last of a four-semester sequence of ear training and musicianship courses required of all music majors. Along with MUSC-211A, Music Theory IV, the course focuses on sharpening student skills in sight reading, sight singing, and taking dictations.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Sight sing melodies which contain chromatic intervals, remote modulation, augmented 6th
    chords, Neapolitan 6th chords, and 20th century materials (changing meter, atonality, remote
    modulation, and modality).
  2. 2. Perform rhythms at sight which include duplet division of dotted note values, triplet division of
    undotted note values, changing meter and time signatures, and hemiola.
  3. 3. Take dictation of melodies which contain modulation to remote keys, modality, and
    nondiatonic tones.
  4. 4. Take dictation of harmonic progressions which contain secondary dominants, augmented 6th
    and Neapolitan 6th chords, and modulation to foreign keys.
  5. 5. Take simple four-part dictation.
