PTAP 100 Introduction to Physical Therapy

This course provides an introduction to the role of a Physical Therapist Assistant in the healthcare delivery system. History and organization of the Physical Therapy profession, standards of practice, laws and regulations, the interdisciplinary healthcare team, ethics, and accessing healthcare literature will be covered.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Describe the history of the Physical Therapy profession.
  2. 2. Define the role of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
  3. 3. Discuss licensure and practice guidelines and laws.
  4. 4. Discuss the role of a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) as part of the health care team.
  5. 5. Discuss the roles of other members of the health care team as it relates to Physical Therapy.
  6. 6. Apply the basic principles of health care ethics and morals as they relate to Physical Therapy.
  7. 7. Appraise Physical Therapy research.
  8. 8. Demonstrate the ability to access health care literature.
  9. 9. Discuss the types of Physical Therapy services and the supervisory requirements for each.
  10. 10. Apply patient's rights to clinical care.
  11. 11. Discuss conceptual frameworks of function.
  12. 12. Discuss the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice and its application to clinical care.
  13. 13.Apply different insurance billing and reimbursement procedures.
  14. 14. Apply the principles of stress management to self and a patient/client population.
