THET 115 Introduction to Design and Technical Theatre

Students will explore the fundamentals of design: line, shape, color, value, and space, and develop the creative aspects of theatrical scenic, lighting, and costume design from concept to build, run, and strike. Students will gain a working knowledge of theatre terminology as well as a familiarity with tools and techniques for scenery, paint, props, costumes, lighting, audio, and video.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Apply in practice a range of expression within the art of theatre design by exploring different
    methods and media in communicating ideas.
  2. 2. Model safety practices in a backstage environment.
  3. 3. Examine and demonstrate the connection between text analysis, research, and theatrical design.
  4. 4. Demonstrate a working vocabulary of terms necessary to design and construction.
  5. 5. Interpret construction drawings and plots.
  6. 6. Articulate the ways in which theory and practice meet through discussions of their own and
    other students’ work.
  7. 7. Demonstrate how aesthetics, form, and composition contribute to the process of creative
    development by exploring the fundamentals of design: line, shape, color, value, and space.
    8. Identify and apply theories of and perspectives on the creative process when creating and
    critically analyzing a work of art or other creative content.
  8. 8. Identify and apply theories of and perspectives on the creative process when creating and
    critically analyzing a work of art or other creative content.
  9. 9. Apply a variety of problem solving methods to generate innovative and creative approaches to
    achieve a goal or solve a problem.
