The major forms of mass media are studied both historically and in their present forms. Emphasis is on the effects of radio, television, and film in our society.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Explain various models of mass communication.
  2. 2. Identify the characteristics of a critical consumer.
  3. 3. Discuss important historical events in the development of books; newspapers, magazines, and journals;
    motion pictures; recorded music; radio; and television, videotape, laser discs, and cablecasting.
  4. 4. Identify and rank the major functions of the mass media.
  5. 5. Express personal reactions to specific issues relevant to the current state of the media.
  6. 6. Discuss the effects of mass media.
  7. 7. Explain various approaches to research on mass media effects and impact.
  8. 8. Discuss the importance of ethics in mass media.
