TVRD 150 Introduction to Radio

This course is an introduction to the radio industry standards and production. Students will learn the basic operations of a radio station including programming, writing, recording, interviewing, editing, and announcing skills. Students will also listen to and analyze professional radio programs, learn about the different types of radio stations, the evolution of radio, and challenges of the future.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Discuss the history of radio.
  2. 2. Identify and understand the different types of radio station formats.
  3. 3. Obtain a basic understanding of ratings and their relationship to demographics.
  4. 4. Describe the functions of the employees of a radio station.
  5. 5. Understand the basic functionality of a radio station console.
  6. 6. Utilize field audio recording equipment and conduct basic radio interviews.
  7. 7. Demonstrate proficiency in basic audio editing.
  8. 8. Write and produce a 30-second and a 60-second sonic ID for possible air on internet-based radio station.
  9. 9. Participate in group peer listening critiques of student projects.
  10. 10. Be a member of team producing a talk radio show for potential air on internet-based radio station.
  11. 11. Discuss intellectual property/copyright law.
