TVRD 223 Writing for Screen Narrative

This course will teach the strategies and means to develop and execute narrative scripts with the primary focus on the short form narrative film. Emphasis is placed on the student's increasing ability to employ the tools of the craft, including but not limited to: story structure, mythic structure, plot, characterization, dialogue, format, story editing and revision. Conventional scriptwriting techniques will be covered as well as critical approaches to understanding these techniques. Elements of the feature film form will be studied, extrapolated and applied to shorter forms as well.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Read and analyze the three-act structure of a narrative story.
  2. 2. Identify and apply the formatting requirements for a narrative script
  3. 3. Recognize and apply the writing style of a narrative script.
  4. 4. Describe the nature and execution of a narrative concept.
  5. 5. Understand and apply the principles of characterization in a narrative script.
  6. 6. Develop a concept into narrative treatment form.
  7. 7. Analyze a narrative script and/or film.
  8. 8. Apply the mythic structure of stories to a narrative script.
  9. 9. Utilize the principles of dialogue as a means of exposition and expression in a narrative script.
  10. 10. Understand and apply the unique requirements of short films and their application in the narrative script
    form.
  11. 11. Provide constructive feedback on the writings of others.
