Communication Studies - A.A. Degree (Transfer)

This curriculum is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year institution to major in a wide range of communication and media programs. The main emphasis of communication studies is the history, processes, and effects of human communication through speech and related media and writing courses. The curriculum is designed to provide a liberal education in the arts and sciences of human communication. The curriculum gives the student flexibility to pursue a major interest and, at the same time, to fulfill the lower-division general education requirements for transfer to a baccalaureate degree program. Students should seek guidance from advisors and the institution to which they intend to transfer to determine appropriate coursework for specific transfer programs.

A graduate should be able to

  1. Identify, understand, evaluate, and apply ethical reasoning to the practices of communication.
  2. Develop self-confidence in the ability to redefine and overcome communication obstacles.
  3. Evaluate context and adapt communication approach and message accordingly.
  4. Deliver clear, appropriate messages through the most appropriate channels in order to generate shared understanding.

Total Credit Hours: 60

The Arts & Humanities Core requirement may alternatively be fulfilled by completing a World Language Sequence plus one of the following courses: SPCH 151, THET 102, THET 103, THET 202, THET 241, or WMST 193. Students who choose to complete a World Language Sequence are not required to complete General Education Core Electives.
