HIST 215 History of Ireland

Students will be able to describe the his­tory and development of Ireland from the Celtic settlements to modern times. Students will be able to evaluate the impact and response of native Irish society and culture to Celtic, Christian, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, and British influences.

Course Objectives

  1. Summarize the character of prehistoric and early Celtic society.
  2. Analyze the impact of external groups and ideas on the Irish population throughout history, including Vikings, Catholic missionaries, Anglo-Normans, and the British.
  3. Describe Irish resistance to external forces and influences throughout the Middle Ages to the Modern Era.
  4. Describe Irish independence movements throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
  5. Summarize and analyze the politics, religion, and culture of Ireland since independence occurred in 192
  6. Apply introductory research skills that historians use to gather and interpret information.
  7. Employ historical concepts, methods, and/or theories to understand behavior, institutions, and/or change over time.
  8. Formulate specific, unified, and concise theses through writing that demonstrate an understanding of historical thinking.
