ARTS 123 Introduction to Printmaking

Designed for non-visual art majors, this course is an introduction to the theories, practices, and techniques of printmaking, with an emphasis on foundational printmaking concepts. Working with Relief and monotype techniques, students will learn the use of various tools and materials especially made for printmaking application and processes. The emphasis is on creating works of art through traditional and non-traditional printmaking conventions, visual organization, composition, and content. This course also will teach the importance of working in a collaborative environment shared in the printmaking workshop and studio. The working space is set up in a way that students will work with multiple and unique works of art characteristic of printmaking processes and printing techniques. The terms and concepts will provide students with the vocabulary needed to explore the philosophical and ethical issues that art making presents, and its effects on the fine art world. Demonstrations, lectures, and critiques support studio assignments and instruction in traditional and contemporary formats.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and organize information and ideas to develop preliminary concepts as part of the creative process.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternatives to reinforce preliminary concepts.
  3. Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes throughout the creative process.
  4. Apply information and ideas gathered through a creative process to other contexts.
  5. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary unique to printmaking.
  6. Study the art of print and printmaking from both historical and contemporary contexts.
  7. Explore a variety of materials and tools to produce traditional and non-traditional prints.
  8. Develop technical proficiency working with specialized tools to prepare substrates for printing and image making through a variety of approaches including the use of an etching press.
  9. Understand the history of artistic papers and explore the variety of printmaking papers and their usage.
  10. Use elements of arts and principles of design to introduce composition in printmaking.
  11. Apply various color mixing techniques based on color theory in monotype.
  12. Keep an active sketchbook.
  13. Present a portfolio of prints demonstrating progression in craftsmanship and quality of the course objectives.
