ARTS 200 Painting I

Previously ARTT 211. This course is designed to expose students to the fundamentals of painting through lecture, demonstration, and studio experience. Students will learn the materials, tools, and approaches to painting in oil or acrylic. Color mixing and theory as it applies to painting is a central focus of the course. The emphasis is on technical proficiency and direct observation from life. Subjects may include still life, interiors, landscape, portraiture, and figures.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the use of common painting media, materials, and tools in Acrylic or Oil.
  2. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary used in painting.
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to one's own surroundings and the visual world in general.
  4. Develop a general knowledge of contemporary directions in painting.
  5. Develop positive work habits and a concern for craftsmanship.
  6. Effectively describe form and suggest space using color, tonal modulation, and a combination of both.
  7. Perceive and critically analyze the elements that make paintings successful and unsuccessful.
  8. Develop a personal direction, preference, or mode of expression in one's own paintings.
