ARTS 264 Survey of Photography: Past to Present

This course is an examination of the development of photography from its beginnings to the present day. It will include the study of the interrelationships between photography and other visual arts, the effects of changing technologies on the photographic image, and the contributions of major photographers and art movements, as well as historical perspectives.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and organize information and ideas to develop preliminary concepts as part of the creative process.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternatives to reinforce preliminary concepts.
  3. Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes throughout the creative process.
  4. Apply information and ideas gathered through a creative process to other contexts.
  5. Analyze photographic works of art from different photographers, periods, and/or regions from its origins to the present day.
  6. Identify the historical technical processes, their inventors, and the reasons for their popularity and/or failures.
  7. Relate the application of photography and the directions that it has taken to historical perspectives.
