AVMP 235 Principles of Video Editing

Previously TVRD 120. This course will introduce students to the theory and practice of editing video. Emphasis is placed on the student's increasing technical ability to employ the tools of the craft using professional, industry standard, non-linear video editing software. Historic and contemporary examples will serve as the foundation upon which students build a visual storytelling approach, technique, and strategy for their editing craft. Hands-on projects allow students to become adept at incorporating stills, animation, sound, and graphics with video footage.

Course Objectives

  1. Recognize and describe a range of editing styles based on historic, aesthetic, or practical application.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to properly import and incorporate a variety of media including sound, stills, video, and animations in Adobe Premiere Pro video projects.
  3. Demonstrate basic and refined editing techniques generating and incorporating titles, transitions, and effects.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of and proficiency with a variety of video file formats, and utilize appropriate codecs, formats, and settings to generate high quality files.
  5. Demonstrate effective file management skills, including import and render file management, project backup, and archiving of all project media.
  6. Apply appropriate editing strategies to generate media that communicates intended messages to diverse audiences.
